Children and
Holy Communion

At St John’s we admit children, after preparation, to Holy Communion from the age of 7 (approximately). In the Christian tradition baptism has traditionally been the sacrament of full inclusion in the life of the church, so we admit to Communion before Confirmation. Generally we run classes for children in Lent with First Communion at Easter.

Junior Church

Junior Church (for children aged 4 to 11) is run by a team of volunteers and takes place on most Sundays during term time. Click here for the current schedule.

Junior Church sessions begin at 10.30am in a dedicated space in the gallery. The children relate Christian teaching to their own experience through age-appropriate activities including art and crafts, projects, discussions, games and songs, using a variety of resources including Roots, a lectionary-based teaching programme. The session often ends with a time of prayer, before the children join their parents or guardians in the main church service.

Music for Children

Music is a very important part of Christian Spirituality for people of all ages and we take seriously our responsibility to introduce children to Christian music. This work is led by our Director of Music, supported by our Choral Scholars. We aim to sing at each All-Age service, where we involve children in both music and worship.
